Gateway's in financial trouble... restructuring. They may be cutting corners on quality. Dell's the giant. Kind of like Kodak in the old days, or McDonald's today. Medium quality stuff at a cheap price. If you're going to buy generic, I'd go with Micron. Of the hundreds of "generic" I've bought over the years, they had the least trouble and most "bang for the buck". But if you want a real computer, get it custom built.

Dell.
It is cheaper to buy a made machine from Dell than to build one. You also get a 1 yr guarantee from Dell for any defects.

Macs are the best. They are more secure and more user friendly than PC's. They cost more than Dell or Gateway but they are well worth it. I have the Mac G5, OS X, version 10.3.9, and I really love it. Look for one that isn't the newest, for starters, on www.craigslist.com or www.ebay.com.

They're both overpriced, unless you specifically want to deal with their mindless tech support monkeys. Buy the components and build one yourself. Its educational & rewarding. I was able to get a fast machine for more than 3x less than the market value simply by selecting and assembling my own components.
