Does anyone have (or know about) the hp pavilion zt1201s? It is a standard XP HE install, and all I have done is connect it to the net, and run updates on both the Norton Antivirus 2002 (useless, and will be replaced by Zonealarm soon) and Windows. Because it hasn't been online for 2+ years, there are/were over 21 Windows updates. Ever since all these patches were applied, it runs really slow. Anyone have the same issue? Any ideas appreciated.

I think the hot fixes slow down all computers. SP2 seems to help - but it seems the best thing to do is back up all your data and re-format. Try going to the f-secure site - they will do you a free on line virus scan and ccleaner is good for spyware. If you're going to use a free anti virus then save f-secure's free trial until you're really in trouble. Otherwise download their 3 week free trial of the anti-virus and firewall. It's good. not only monitors what's coming in - but Trojans "phoning home" too.

Yes..I have had the same thing...bought a second hand laptop from someone who hadn't bothered with windows updates.
The computer was running really smoothly.....I decided to download & install updates ..loads & loads (only critical security ones).
Immediately, the machine is now so sticky, sluggish & suffers from freezing...wasn't like that before those blasted updates.
Have had a good clean out & defrag etc...improved somewhat but not running like it did before the updates.
Pleased you are getting rid of Norton...it soooooo messes up your computer in terms of how smooth & responsive it is.

XP - especially SP2 is highly RAM dependant - you need at least 512MB - preferably 1MB+

You can install various "Task" monitors - see what is running. You can tweak the "Services" to dramatically reduce what is running... Also, there is a neat utility by Mike Lin that let's you see what is on your Startup directories - link below
