if you are using Windows XP Pro, right click on the desktop and click on Arrange Icons > Show Desktop icons. If they don't show Windows Explorer has likely crashed, restart your machine. If that doesn't work you may have some spyware . . . good luck

I think TruthIsRelative is on the right track. You're probably logged into your computer as another user. If you have Windows XP, click on Start --> Log Off --> Switch User. Then click on the icon that represents your the user account you normally use.
