Explain the tape & float method. do you wet the tape first?

Place general purpose drywall mud over all joints with a drywall knife. Place dry tape over the joint and press into place with a 6" wide drywall knife. Tape all joints. Once the mud is dry, usually the next day, lightly sand the joints and float drywall topping compound over the joints using an 8" knife. Allow that to dry. If you plan to paint do one more coat with a 10" knige.
