Do you think that it's okay to become good friends with co-workers, or should you keep your relationship strictly professional?

I'm just curious...at my last job, I became really good friends with a co-worker, and it made it really hard to leave the job. We didn't associate outside of work until after I left the job, because the company looked down on it, but now we keep in touch and see each other every once in a while.

I always end up being friends with my co-workers. Not like, hang-out on the weekends type friends, but we definately laugh and joke and are more than strictly professional. I figure that if you spend 8 hours a day with the same people, you better get along. It does make it hard to leave, but I think it enhances the quality of each day. They really are the people that I spend most of my time with...a second family in a way. I know some people feel strongly against it, but as long as friendships aren't taken advantage of and people still work hard, I don't think it's a big deal. Just human nature.

I think the general role of thumb is to not mix personal and professional lives. You didnt really mix the two because you only associated with this coworker while out work. A lot of young people make this mistake and party with their co workers which can have negitive side effects especially if one of the co workers out ranks the others or is a supervisor. I know that I have met some wonderful people in the jobs I've had and a few times I did mix personal and professional but was lucky enough not to have any side effects

I think becoming friends is only a natural progression to an awesome work environment. Leaving a job would never end that friendship so it shouldn't even be an option. Prayers =)

Yes, I have a very close friend who is a co-worker. We do talk to each other away from the office and socialize very occasionally.

I think it is ok to be friends with co-workers-as long as it is just friends and not intimate. I think making friends at work would make work easier when things are friendly. But if it is intimate--you are just asking for trouble.

I am friends with EVERY one of my co-workers. Some of us even planned a trip together and had a blast. Where I work it boosts company morale when we are all friends!!
