you can glue the edges together with a water-soluble glue stick before sewing. It will wash out in the first washing. This also works for non-stretch fabrics and for patching clothing.
Some fabric stores sell special fabric glue sticks but I've found that the regular paper ones work just as well and are much cheaper.
Using paper of any kind can dull your needle very quickly.

I used a special presser foot on the sewing machine. I think it was called an even-feed presser foot, and had little teeth under it, similar to the feed-dog teeth on the surface of the machine. Then both layers of fabric would feed through the machine at the same rate, and not slide. No paper was needed. Or if you are using a serger, get one with differential feed. It has the same effect. Pin your fabric well (and obviously, remove pins as you sew!).

Use parchment paper (you can get some lightweight paper at the fabric store).
Cut the paper the same as the pattern (that is, pin the paper on top of the fabric before you cut it), and keep the pins in it. After you've completed sewing, you can just rip the paper away.
For cutting ease, invest in a roller cutter and cutting board made specifically for it. It cuts through fabric like butter.

pin paper to the down side (news print works ) before you put it into the sewing Macing. The paper doesn't st reach as it goes through the foot but it can be torn away from the finished piece easily.

There are machine needles available for stretch fabrics. This will help reduce puckering.

You can also try using a serger. It will give you that nice, finished edge, like the ones you find on professionally-made pieces.
