Theres international groups like amnesty international. There are religious groups, and there are local community groups. A lot of them are based on a social group or an issue. If you are worried about being popular I would join a sport you enjoy. Sports are best socially because it tells everyone about you and as long as youre pretty good and treat everyone decent youll always belong to one huge family- even if you go abroad. So if you take up soccer or rugby or baseball etc - you always have your team to hang out with and youll never really need an introduction to others. I really would - even if its track. Otherwise you can join the school paper, a chess club, the debate team. Some of these are nerdy but the point is you join and interact with others too. In any public school you can start somethign too - you can start a 'wheels on meals' or a comedy club, anythign really.
