If you don't know what a period is or what it does, what would make you think you're having symptoms?
In case you're not joking:
Once a female reaches puberty, a hormonal feedback system begins in her body that causes a monthly cycle. The period is just a part of that cycle. First your hormones cause you to ovulate, or release an egg, from one of your ovaries. The lining of your uterus begins to build up with blood in anticipation of the egg being fertilized and a pregnancy resulting. If the egg is fertilized it will burrow into the now thick lining of the uterus and grow into a baby. If the egg is not fertilized, about 12-16 days after ovulation, the lining of the uterus will begin to slough off. It exits the female's body via the vaginal opening. This is the period; it's the blood-infused lining of the uterus exiting your body because you are not pregnant. Then the hormonal levels start to build up all over again, preparing for another ovulation, which will lead to another period, which will lead to another ovulation, etc... The entire cycle lasts, on average, for 28 days but some women get their period ad frequently as every 21 days or as infrequently as every 35 days. For the first year or two that a girl has hers, it will likely be very unpredictable and she will often skip months. Your period will stop while you are pregnant and when you reach menopause (the time in your life when you stop ovulating) it will stop altogether, signalling that you can no longer bear children.
