my husband purchased an item for my birthday, unfortuntely, I did not like it. We called the owner of the craft store from where he purchased it at, to see if we could get his money back. The owner of the store said that he could refund our money but would have to charge a 35% restocking fee. I know it's only right to have to pay a fee,but isn,t 35% abit to much?

35% is the going rate for an artist's consignment fee. It's possible that the artist was paid for the item once it was sold - and if it is returned, the storekeeper will have lost the cost of the item (they can't very well ask the artist for the cheque back, can they?). You could probably exchange it for another piece of the same artist's work (same price or more) without any penalty.

Hubby should have asked about the exchange policy before paying... I personally think the 35% stinks, but as a shopkeeper myself, I've been burned this way before.

Exchange policies should be posted in the store, but it's not a legal requirement to do so, and there is no legislation to cover it.
