Of course. Anyone who speaks english there will tell you where not to go, just ask them. Its just like travelling in most other areas of the world.

Stay away from the favelas (slums) unless you are on a tour. A lot of crime happens in those areas from what I've heard/read.
Don't look like a tourist when you leave your hotel room. Don't wear socks and sandals at the same time! Try not to wear clothes that look like vacation clothes (loud hawaiin print shirts, etc).
Always carry a few bucks for WHEN you get mugged. Petty theft is the most common type of crime in Rio if you're a tourist.
Watch out for the street kids that might try to distract you while someone else tries to steal your camera, etc. You'll likely see them along the boardwalk in Copa and Ipanema.
Don't walk on the beach at night. Even be careful during the day!
Travel with at least 1 - 2 other people if you can.
Look confident about where you are going. Again, avoid looking like a tourist. Try to blend in. Maybe even "tan" a bit before you go to Rio if you are pale white right now.
Have fun. Most muggings are basically thugs wanting some quick cash or a camera, etc. Just go along with the mugging. Don't try to be a hero. Give them the cash and go on your way. Try not to carry too much cash, however. Maybe $20 - 50. You can, of course, carry a decoy wallet & keep your money in a hidden money belt/purse.

Stay in groups. There is safety in numbers.Watch your stuff on the beach, young kids are experts at distraction and WILL steal your belongings if your not careful. They move to the side kinda like a crab, when you least expect it they are right next to you.
Also watch out for locals wanting to take you on a tour of the rain forest, you may not come back.We were told by the hotel staff that locals invite you to witness a type of religious sacrifice with a chicken or animal in the forest ,who knows it might be you.Be CAREFUL and use common sense.

Sorry, but if you are looking for safe places you should go to Swizerland.
I live in Belo Horizonte, 360 km from there, and I have no idea to go with my family there.
Rio is dangerous for "cariocas" too. But if you wanna have emotions, Rio is perfect!
It's depends on your age and the people that you'll be there.

stay faraway from the favelas (slums) except you're on a excursion. quite some crime occurs in those factors from what i have heard/study. do not look like a vacationer once you leave your lodge room. do not positioned on socks and sandals mutually! attempt now to not positioned on outfits that look like holiday outfits (loud hawaiin print shirts, and so on). continually carry some money for once you get mugged. Petty robbery is the most problem-free type of crime in Rio once you're a vacationer. pay attention of the line toddlers that ought to target to distract you even as some different person tries to scouse borrow your digicam, and so on. you'll likely see them alongside the boardwalk in Copa and Ipanema. do not walk on the coastline at nighttime. also be careful in the course of the day! holiday with a minimum of one million - 2 human beings in case you may. look sensible about the position you're going. back, circumvent looking like a vacationer. attempt to mixture in. perhaps even "tan" slightly before you bypass to Rio when you're dwindled white immediately. have exciting. maximum muggings are truly thugs wanting some quick funds or a digicam, and so on. in basic terms bypass alongside with the mugging. do not attempt to be a hero. provide them the money and bypass on your way. attempt now to not carry too a lot funds, notwithstanding. perhaps $20 - 50. you may, for sure, carry a decoy wallet & keep you money in a hidden funds belt/handbag.

yes, i'm a young girl, and i was fine by myself there during the day, at night and stuff i was with my family though. at night i did get a little nervious, but overall it is very safe, its not what people would normally assume. i haven't been there in like a year or two, but i've been about half a dozen times, it amazing, nights can get a little scetchy, just try not to go anywhere at night alone, or wear flashy jewlry and you will be fine. have fun!!
