obviously, no offspring would mean that after the first generation the entire species would die out. that's not a favorable trait for natural selection...

Most obvious is to survive. No eternal life. - the amount of offsprings is based on the probability of surival before reaching sexual maturity. A fly or fish has 1000's of offspring - 90 % at least are eaten befor they can procreate. Western human had 10 a few generations ago, today 1-2 - enought to keep the species surviving.
Another is to keep the specie adapted to the environment. Surviving individuals are better adapted - there is natural selection towards a specie that is fit.

Species reproduction is important for two reasons:
1) Continuation of the species - A species requires a certain number of offspring for their birth rates to offset their death rates. This means that they must have effective numbers of children, or their numbers may simply slowly be widdled away by death by predators, environmental difficulties, or even age.
2) Survival of the Fittest - In order for a species to survive, adapt, and evolve, there must be numbers that are weeded out. The strongest survive, and thus they have strong offspring, which allows for the continuation and betterment of the species.

so that the life cycle of the species wont die. without species it would be a dead earth & perhaps a dead universe. & there is not enough land to give the species a desent burial.

So the species wouldn't die out!
Its the cycle of life.
Baby are born-
they develop into adults-
they have their own babies so they have done their duty in life- then they get old- they die
