Yeah, you can have snails. And they do breed like crazy, especially the ramshorn snails. At some point you are going to wish you did not have snails, and go out and buy a bottle of "had a snail". If you want something to clean off the algae, then an algae eater or plecostomus, or similar type of fish will do.

yes you can end up with baby snails in your tank. But it takes time and I'm not sure if you can tell a male snail from a female snail. I have 4 snails in my fishtank - 2 black, 1 ivory and 1 yellow snail. Shrimp are another good thing to get for your tank to keep it clean. I buy Ghost Shrimps, but they die quickly, their lifespan is only about 4-6 months. But they do a great job keeping the tank clean!
Good Luck!

Many snails will breed in the tank - if you want live plants that will be the end of them. In fact in a heavily planted aquarium I have had for many years it was extremely difficult to completly remove every snail to protect my plants!
You don't have to breed the snails, they will breed themselves so long as there is enough food for them.

i've got even have been given a ten gallon on the 2nd, so i do no longer see you as a "stupid amateur fishkeeper". in case you had a a million gallon bowl on the different hand...properly ahem. The snails are hermaphrodites, they might breed on their own, and can rapidly over run a tank. there are particular fish you will get to maintain the inhabitants down, in spite of the shown fact that it somewhat is possibly unwise to function something devoid of understanding what different fish you have. they are additionally lil' buggers to kill. I study an editorial some weeks in the past, they tried to kill off a tank of snails and failed miserably. They tried boiled water, they tried to dry them out, they even tried making use of bleach. there is the lettuce technique, you overwhelm a chew of eco-friendly lettuce into the water and leave it over night. Then interior the morning you do away with it, place it in a bag, and placed it interior the freezer for an hour or 2. this might kill the snails on there. i do no longer understand approximately your annual restart of your fish tank. Do you recommend you rip it down and scrub all of it? if so it somewhat is unwise, the useful micro organism necessary to interrupt down ammonia and nitrite could be destroyed, making your fish circulate by using all the Aquarium cycle issues unnecessarily. With usual tank maintenance, 25% water adjustments and gravel vac., changing clear out cartrages/media might recommend you does not might desire to take each and every thing down and scrub it. ---------------------------------- further: stay faraway from any chemical compounds to kill off the snails, you will basically finally end up with one hundred fifty-2 hundred ineffective snails on your tank, and a lot extra burried on your substrate. those will decompose and reason all varieties of nasty **** on your fish.

Sure do, that's why pet stores usually have a problem with them, usually they hitchhike on aquarium plants you buy.

YEs - they often reproduce very quickly and become a nuisance - do not put them in.
