Ha ha have you noticed how much care was taken by people to answer this question using the correct spellings.....
I don't text that much, it annoys me, you can get way more said in a quick conversation. But I do think it is affecting peoples way of speaking full stop. It's might not be the best thing but language has never stayed the same for too long really. Think of the Shakespearean or the Medieval Times, we went with the trends then.... we'll do it again.

Some people do!
I think it's OK when you are texting, because it takes so long on a phone to put a sentence together.
But on here, I think everyone should use a bit more effort to type proper sentences.
All questions and answers are translated into other languages, for other users around the world.
Abbreviated or slang words do not always make sense when translated to say, Japanese or Indian, or any other of the languages in this community.
You can also use the spell checker, when you ask or answer a question.

I'm sure there are many people who experience the same problem, but, when you've finished typing your answer, you can click on Check Spelling (just above and to the right of where you're typing right now) before you click on Preview (at the bottom of the page), and Submit (on the next page). This would, undoubtedly, pick up what it considers spelling errors.

If mobiles had been around when I was a kid I probably would not hold this view, but I am very concerned that my 12 year old son has problems when writing an essay for school as it now comes naturally to him to write in 'text slang'

I still get to practice both professional business writing and regular ol chatting with my Vfriends....so I'm good at differentiating it. It's like cussing. You don't cuss at random strangers in public (i hope u dont) - but when you're chilling by the pool with ur buddies, you cuss like a horse.

Fortunately I came into the world long before texting so I don't have this problem. I consider it a totally idle, untidy and ignorant habit, however, and certainly wouldn't employ anyone who practised it.

Well you obviously do. Most americans have trouble writing and spelling, and also walking on their hind legs. Don't know about anyone else except preschool children.
