Maybe you just got bad gas. Try changing it out.

You could be getting fuel evaporation in the line from overheating.

I would check the other sensible things people have offered here. The timing, the fuel filter and see if they work.

If they don't, try wrapping the fuel line with a thick wet cloth and keep wetting it as you mow, every couple of minutes or so. If it works look for a more permanent solution like moving or insulating the fuel line.

Maybe make you mixture a little more rich with the mixing screw. It will probably run rougher to start but improve as the engine heats up.

It is running out of gas. It could be the fuel filter and/or it could be a small filter in the bottom of the tank. Usually from old fuel. Change the filter and remove this filter from the bottom of the tank or remove the tank and clean the tank with a good solvent. That should do it.

Briggs & Stratton, that's a good mower. I agree with what was said above that you should have it checked out. I don't know what could cause the backfiring.

Sounds like you may have a vapor lock. The fact that it runs for 10 minutes before hiccuping, may be due to a fuel line having been displaced to where it gets too hot!

Try a better grade of fuel or a different brand of fuel. My lawn mower and weed wacker do the EXACT same thing if I use the "cheap gas" from Am/Pm.
When I use fuel from Shell, Chevron, or Union 76 all goes well!

Did you change the Fuel Filter- sounds like you are running out of gas- I belong to a great yahoo Group for MTD mowers,
mtdgardentractors@yahoogroups.com address you question to George.

Many , many mowers are MTD made.

Is it gas injected? may be a foul tension regulator. may be "warmth" appropriate. No spark at a million or greater cylinders. Does it back hearth at idle or below acceleration? will it restart after a shutdown?Does it have a distributorless ignition? is the verify engine gentle on? want greater data to help diagnose.

18.5 apposed twin? that is a good engine....., do try it without the gas cap...

DO check for spark (be carefull, they are hot) when it cuts out.
IT may be a new coil, but there are bad apples in mass produced equipment..... (it was a oem coil correct? After market's are not to be trusted)

when it shuts down did you check for spark, this sounds like a magneto breaking down but you said you replaced it. also try opening the fuel cap next time it shuts down & see if it will restart then.

Good luck
