Well, I don't know what kind of price range you're looking for, but since you're a beginner, I'll assume you're looking for a low- to mid-priced guitar. My list would be...
1) B. C. Rich: They're hard to beat for looks; they've got the most absolutely wicked body styles ever, but the quality on the lower-priced models leaves a lot to be desired.
2) Ibanez: I've played several Ibanez guitars, including a $1500 model, and I'm not that impressed by them. However, some people really like them, and quite a few big-name guitarists play them.
3) PRS: The good ones are expensive, but they do have some lower-priced models. PRS guitars can handle a wide variety of styles, including metal, so I'll put them halfway on my list.
4) Schecter: This guitar company is starting to come into its own, and a lot of rock/metal guitarists play them. I like their feel and sound, and the prices on most of them are quite affordable.
5) ESP/LTD: This is probably the best straight-up, hard-as-nails metal guitar. To be honest, I've never plugged one into an amp, but I've played one unplugged, and they feel pretty darn nice. I played the LTD F-400FM; it's a very lightweight guitar, looks awesome, and plays very smoothly. Metallica, Lacuna Coil, Deftones, and Slayer are just a few of the bands that use ESP guitars.
Of the guitars that I've played, Schecter would be my choice because of the price and also because I really like the Seymour Duncan pickups they use in many of their models. I prefer a less harsh sound, and Seymour Duncans fit my taste more than the EMGs that ESP uses on their guitars. While ESPs look great and are more widely used, Schecters are a really great value in regards to price and performance. My advice would be to head to a music store and start trying out guitars. That's the best way to find one that suits you best.

my standard favorite is the gibson les paul
best. guitar. ever.
but its hella expensive and for a beginner it would be impractical
and i think i would suit classic rock better than metal
so i will go with another favorite
a basic fender strat will do the trick
nice, well made, not too expensive, and it works for anything and everything
