I have seen it before and I'm pretty sure monkeys ball is the name it is a sailing knot used to ad wieght to the end of a rope for throwing it is similair to thos buda ball dog toys.

I have actually found the answer it is called a monkeys fist not ball thats why everything I looked up was weird

Go to the Renaissance Fair and ask any man wearing a sailors outfit. Youll be most likely successful in the west coast, as sailor/mariner actors tend to be more likely to be at a fair near water.

I know it sounds silly, but I have attended a fair before and they seem to know a lot about knots.
