It cost $50 a year, u can either pay for it with a credit card over the xbox or go to a electronic store like Best Buy and buy a 12 month gold subscription card for $50.

Live costs about 50 dollars a year. Go buy a subscription from bestbuy or circuitcity or online. Its definitely worth the money. I have had it for two years and its great. Once you get the subscription you have to sign up...you will need an internet connection and a credit card number...that's about it.

I have some articles on it. Good luck. If you are connecting from Xbox 360, then this is how you connect to Xbox 360.

To join Xbox Live:

Make sure your Xbox 360 console is connected to Xbox Live.

For information about connecting to Xbox Live, see Connect to Xbox Live.
To simplify the process, collect the details of your Microsoft Passport Network account before you create your Xbox Live membership. You already have a Passport Network account if you have any of the following:
A Hotmail account.
An MSN account.
An Xbox.com account.

If you don't have them yet, visit www.passport.net to set one up, or you can create one from the Xbox Dashboard during this sign-up procedure.

A Passport Network account requires a valid e-mail account, which you cannot create during sign-up. To set up a free Hotmail account, visit MSN Hotmail.
Turn on your system with no disc in the tray. From the Xbox Live area of the Xbox Dashboard, select the Xbox Live banner. This will open the Xbox Live area of the Xbox Guide.

Select Join Xbox Live and follow the on-screen instructions.

Here you will have the option to change your gamertag. You'll also supply information like the e-mail address and password associated with your Passport Network account, your country/region, your language, your name, and your phone number.
Tip

You can enter information using either a USB PC keyboard plugged into a controller port or your Xbox 360 controller and the on-screen virtual keyboard.

When prompted, select your desired membership type from the list of options.

Xbox Live Gold memberships are paid memberships that require you to supply valid credit-card information. For more information about Xbox Live memberships, see www.xbox.com/live.
Follow the remaining steps: enter a contact address, choose an Xbox Live Gamer Zone, set your communication preferences for Xbox 360 promotions, and select a time zone and daylight-saving option.

Then you'll be all set to dive headlong into exciting multiplayer Xbox Live play, multiplayer chat, Xbox Live Marketplace downloads, and other cool activities.

Create Your Gamer Profile

Once you position and connect your Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system, you'll be ready to start using it. Initial setup is simple: set your default language, create your gamer profile, and you're off and running.

To begin creating your gamer profile:

The first time you turn on your Xbox 360 console you'll be prompted to set a default language. Use your controller's left stick and the A button to select a language for your console.
Note

You can change language and other console settings (including time, audio, display, and automatic shutdown) in the System area of the Xbox Dashboard.

Once you've set your language, you're ready to create your gamer profile.

Choose one of the following options:
To start playing games as quickly as possible, choose Create an Offline Profile.
If you already have an Xbox Live membership, choose I Am a Member of Xbox Live.
If you're not yet a member of Xbox Live but know you're ready to join, choose I Want to Join Xbox Live.
Note

To access Xbox Live, your Xbox 360 system must be connected to the Internet, directly or through a network, with a high-speed (cable or DSL) connection.

Step 1: Choose an ISP
Step 2: Connect Your System
Step 3: Join Xbox Live

Introduction to High-Speed ISPs

Xbox Live Compatible ISPs
Xbox Live works with high-speed Internet service through a DSL or cable modem or a gateway (an integrated modem and router). The following high-speed Internet service providers (ISPs) support Xbox Live.

The Xbox Live Compatible designation signifies that an ISP is working with the Xbox team to make it as easy as possible for you to connect to Xbox Live. Additional providers are added over time, and even if your current high-speed Internet provider is not listed, you may still be able to connect to Xbox Live.

So you want to connect your Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system to your high-speed Internet service. Choosing the best connection type isn't as hard as it might seem—there are only four main connection methods, and we'll give you the skinny on each.

To get your system up and running as quickly as possible, a Direct Modem Connection to Xbox Live is your best bet. It's perfect if all you want to do online is play games.
To share your Internet connection with your PC while playing on Xbox Live, use one of these connections types.

If your ISP (Internet service provider) provided you with a stand-alone modem (rather than a USB or internal PCI modem), you can purchase a router and use a Router Connection to share Internet service between your Xbox 360 system, your PC, and other devices in your home.
If your ISP provided you with a gateway (which combines a modem and a wireless router), you can share your Internet connection using a Gateway Connection.
If you have a USB or internal PCI modem, choose a Windows ICS Connection.
Any of these connections (with the exception of gateway) can be either wired or wireless.

A wired connection may be easier and more reliable if your Xbox 360 console is close to your PC and/or your Internet connection; wireless may be more convenient if your console is not positioned near your computer and/or router, modem, or other networking equipment.

Wireless Connection

Wireless networking is perfect when you want to connect devices in locations where it would be difficult or expensive to run Ethernet cables.

Let's say your PC and the high-speed Internet equipment from your ISP (modem, router, or gateway) are in your office, and you want to use your Xbox 360™ system for Xbox Live play in your family room with your high-definition TV. Wireless networking will get you out of drilling holes in your walls and running Ethernet cables throughout your home.

Considerations
The Xbox 360 system was explicitly designed for easy integration with a wireless network. However, the quality and effectiveness of your wireless network depends on a number of factors. Please note:

The Xbox 360 console supports only the Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter and Xbox Live Compatible wireless-to-Ethernet bridges, routers, and gateways bearing the Xbox Live Compatible logo.

For a list of all Xbox Live Compatible equipment, see Compatible Home Networking Equipment.
Microsoft does not provide technical support or troubleshooting assistance for wireless networking devices that are not certified as Xbox Live Compatible. If you have questions or problems with such a device, please contact the manufacturer of the device rather than Microsoft.
If your wireless-to-Ethernet bridge is not Xbox Live Compatible, you will probably need to configure it with your PCbefore connecting it to your Xbox 360 console.
The distance between your wireless-capable router or gateway and your Xbox 360 console, the construction of your home, the presence of other wireless devices (like cordless phones), and other sources of interference (like microwave ovens) can negatively affect the strength of a wireless signal. A weak signal may result in the following issues when playing games on Xbox Live:
Difficulty finding and connecting to sessions.
Disconnection or dropping from sessions.
Lag or other poor performance.
If you want to stream audio and video to your Xbox 360 system from a Windows PC, look for the Designed for Media Center Edition logo on your wireless gear. This wireless equipment has been tested to not merely ensure great gameplay on Xbox Live, but to meet the stringent requirements for audio and video streaming. (You can, however, stream audio and digital photos from a Windows XP–based PC. For details, see Use a PC with Xbox 360.)

Home Networking Basics

Do I Need A Home Network?
Xbox Live play does not require a home network. You can connect your Xbox 360™ console directly to a cable or DSL modem with a standard Ethernet cable for a fast, trouble-free setup.

A direct connection has its disadvantages, however, including:

Your PC and your Xbox 360 system cannot access the Internet at the same time.
Swapping the modem connection between your Xbox 360 system and your PC gets old quickly.
Unless your Xbox 360 console and your TV are right next to your modem, you'll need to drape Ethernet cable across your house to enjoy an Internet connection.
Note

In most cases you will need to use your PC to configure your high-speed Internet modem for a direct connection with your Xbox 360 system. Contact your Internet provider for details.

Why Would I Want a Home Network?
Setting up a network isn't as intimidating as it sounds, and the advantages are many:

You don't have to unplug your computer and reconnect your Xbox 360 console every time you want to play.
You can access Xbox Live while another member of the household is sending e-mail or surfing the Web (though this may decrease access speed).
With a wireless network you can hide unsightly cables and equipment.
If you have a USB or internal PCI modem (as opposed to a modem with an Ethernet connection, also referred to as RJ-45), it's the only way you'll be able to access Xbox Live.

What Kind of Network is Right for Me?
You can connect your Xbox 360 system directly to your Internet service provider's modem, to a router, to a gateway, to a hub/switch, or even to a Windows-based PC running Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

Good luck.
