It may be hard to tell as two signs of infection are redness and tenderness. You will probably feel both of those already with a new tattoo. There may be a yellowish drainage coming from it as well that may be smelly. Continue to put Polysporin, or another antibiotic cream on it until it heals. It should be fine.

If you had any redness, irritation or swelling around the tattoo at first, it should be gone away no later than three days. Or if there is pus coming from your tattoo, then it is definitely infected. They may "weep" a little (either a clear liquid or something with the color of the ink in it). If you're really in doubt, either consult your physician or your tattoo artist should be willing to take a look at it free of charge and either tell you it's infected or not. But it's not something to play around with. They can cause pretty nasty infections, and also, it can ruin some really awesome artwork.

If the tatoo itself or the area around it becomes very red, swollen, and sore you may be developing an infection. Also if you have any kind of liquid, or pus coming out of any area of the tatoo or the surrounding area, then you definitely have an infection. You should go see your doctor to get a good antibiotic (pill or ointment) to clear it up. Be careful when you get a tatoo, make sure everything is new and clean!!!!

Okay I'll start by telling you what's normal.
It may feel warm, bruised or swollen for the first few days. You should apply neosporin or vaseline to it about 3 times a day.
It should be dry after a week.
Your body treats a tattoo like an abrasion & tries to scab it over hence the vaseline.
If you get a fever or it is extremely swollen or has red veins radiating from it, you most likely have an infection.
Hope that helps!

If you think your tattoo (or piercing) might be infected, don't sit around waiting for it to get worse! Signs of infection are severe pain, hot redness, swelling and/or a puss discharge (with or without the presence of blood). Infection that is not properly tended to can result in serious health consequences and even death. It is not something to be taken lightly.
Incidentally, if you believe any tattoo or piercing infection is a result of poor sanitary conditions during the procedure, please let your doctor know and have yourself tested for blood disease such as Hepatitis.
