Has the US ever directly fought (not by proxy) with a country which has nuclear weapons?

No never, interestingly no two democratically nations have ever declared war against each other except UK declaring war on Finland in WW2, a war in which no-one died!

PS: The nazis along with most western nations were researching nuclear weapons, amazingly Britain got closest but handed the technology over to the US in payment for the war debt they built.

No, the USA has not fought any wars with Nuclear Capable countries. The USA developed the Atomic Bomb during WWII and used it on Japan to end the war. Germany mever completed an Atomic weapon before WWII ended.

Now ... technically, by your question, we are at war with a Nuclear Power ... The Korean War eneded with a truce, not a peace treaty, so we are still techinically at war with North Korea and they are now a Nuclear Power, which means the USA could legally attack North Korea.

US fight a war with a country with nuclear weapons? come on man everyone knows us only picks fights with countries it knows it can beat, you will never see usa pick a fight with UK, India, Russia, China, France, Israel. instead us tries to build bridges and forge partnership with these countries.
