nitrogen fixation is the process that converts gaseous N into forms usable by living organisms. This is done mostly by nitrogen fixing bacteria (via Biological fixation). Some plants can also directly absorb nitrate and ammoniom ions from the soil. The process that converts nitrates back into N gas is called denitrification and this is also done by bacteria.
