Calcium carbide is a man made chemical, that when dropped into water, fizzes and generates acetylene gas. It was originally used by coal miners who had small lamps that burned the gas, providing light in the dark mines.
It also used in welding, and you can make a really loud cannon with it... but that's another story!

all I can extract from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_carbide
1. When mixed with water, it forms acetylene. In the form of dissolved acetylene, which is a gas used in welding metal. The use of dissolved acetylene in metal welding is less favourable, due to it being easy to explode (and due to other alternatives)
2. a fuel in steelmaking to extend the scrap ratio to liquid iron depending on economics
3. A deoxidizer at ladel treatment facility (ladle is kind of spoon,
esp one used to carry and pour molten metal)
4. As a lighting in carbide lamps. Water is dropped to the stone, and the acetylene that is formed would be ignited. (was used by coal miners, and early cars, although it has been replaced by electric lighting now)
5. Used in traditional custom of Netherland and Belgium called Carbidschieten
6. Used in toy cannon
7. Together with calcium phosphide, calcium carbide is used in floating, self-igniting naval signal flares
8. Used to reduce glares in rifle sights.

nicely to apply it as a gasoline you would be including water to produce acetylene which i think they might use as a gasoline in the event that they did not innovations the autos exploding or melting. So I lean in the direction of chemical weapons,or for carbide lamps(for mining),or welding.

Added to water, it produces acetylene gas, used in welding and used to be used in lamps.
