Hey I know that nobody should ever just sleep all day, simply because it is so unproductive, but are there really and serious health consequences to doing it? if any at all? You see I'm male, 20 years old, in college adn playing sports. Its summer time now and I sleep basically around 12 hours a day. It could be more if I let myself but I try not to. It's usally the worst in the summer when I'm not up to anything too much. Thanks a lot

The more you sleep the more energy you lose. That's why when you sleep alot you wake up tired despite the hours you slept. So just sleep between 7-9hrs and you'll be alright. You will wake up with more energy and more free time.

My thoughts on the subject: Your body and brain will sleep as long as it needs to in order to get rejuvenating rest. Do you wake up refreshed after your sleep? If so you are getting the amount of sleep you need. If you wake up unrefreshed and tired then you may be sleeping too much. Also, you may have sleep apnea and not really be sleeping in the time you think you are. Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing while asleep. We also go through cycles called circadian cycles which regulate the amount of sleep we need.

There is NO SET AMOUNT of sleep for everyone. I need at least 9 hours every day and have for many many years.......sometimes even 10. My adult children are the same way. I always tend to think that anything inexcess of 10 is maybe related to depression........at least, in my family that seems to be the case.

Yes if you sleep to much you slowly become unable to wake up on your own this can turn into a coma. Being in a coma is as close as most living persons can come to a near death experience (i personally try to avoid near death experience's) Comatose people often die while comatose so please stop traveling down this road while you still can. one of the top causes of death for dying while comatose is your family decides not to afford to keep paying for your life support bill and after doing so pulls "the plug" on you. I hope this answer was helpful.
I don't want to scare you but this is the truth as I see it.
