Depends on the franchise -
Spiderman has been excellent thus far. Dr. Octopus never really impressed me as a villian in the comic, but was an awesome villian in the movies, for example. So, the movies are certainly as good as the comics.
Fantastic Four was worse than the comics. Hopefully since it did well, they'll spend a little more on the next one.
Ditto for the Hulk. I'll be interested to see the new take....
First 2 X-Men were great, but since the comic is so awesome, they certainly weren't better than the comic....Never saw the 3rd one, but heard it kinda blew.

by their very nature, the comics are better. i'm not saying the movies aren't good - we really enjoy spider-man, and my husband is a spidey guy. i'm an x-men girl, and yes, the third movie blew - i mean, it went way beyond unacceptable, and not just because they jacked the plot (and i had such hope after the first movie!).
but that's the thing. the comics aren't just stuff exploding and people doing crazy things and girls in less-than-aspirin-bottle-cotton (although we love them for that). they have meaning, and soul. they reach inside us - that's why the guys who first sat down to pen and ink superman weren't just trying to make a million (we can't say the same about paramount studios, can we?). they had something to say about heroes, community - the "truth, justice, and the american way" that is so unknown today that the phrase wasn't included in the new superman movie.
i'm a comic geek, so is my husband. he worked for the most prolific comic store here in houston, in fact. and we both love movies. but i think hollywood has mostly missed the mark on what makes comics so great
