People naturally seek to lend order to chaos. That's where people will look for patterns. One of those patterns is to naturally seek out people who are like-minded and have the same interests.

For some people, acceptance is creating an identity. They believe that by associating themselves with a particular interest group that it will define who they are.

This is prevalent in junior high and high school. As children move into adulthood, they seek to find anchors or weights that will give them a sense of self. Young people are experimenting with new ideas and thoughts that are different and distinguish them from their parents that have certain beliefs.

Sometimes a teen's ideals will be congruent to their parents. Sometimes they won't. That's why home-schooled children develop a different mentality compared to those in public or private schools. In schools, you have to associate with and interact with other people. When you're home-schooled, you only have to interact with your family members.

For people who seek to be accepted, the Psychological aspect would be the positive feeling that comes from people who approve of their actions and behavior. When people behave a certain way that follows the dictates of society or the particular special interest group that has profound influence on their lives, that need for acceptance is important.

By the same token, too much of it can lead to Social Dysfunction because people can get so wrapped up in trying to be what others want them to be succumbing to Peer Pressure. That's why you'll see bullies that have a group around them and people who want to be in that group will join in and laugh at others in order to remain accepted in the group. Those are the people trying to fit in, albet for the wrong reasons.

Ironically enough, some people don't even know why they want to fit in. They just do because they're copying what everyone else does and are being subtly influenced by unconscious factors that are work.

Some people try to fit in and they don't always know what group they're trying to fit into. You see this in Politics where people will vote for a Political Candidate not always knowing what it is the Political Candidate stands for. Some people just vote because there's the word "Republican" or "Democrat" next to their name.

Then you've got people who are soul-searching trying to find where they fit in with the world or if there's some purpose. People like to have a reason. When you fit in, you belong to something or a particular group whose ideals are similar to your own.

Fitting in allows people to be in groups and where there's more harmony. When you go against the grain, you have to deal with conflict when you are in disagreement with someone or a group of people.

Since a lot of people dislike conflict or the unpleasantness that can stem from going up against the norm, people will choose to fit in so to avoid Rejection. Some could argue that it's a Socially Avoidant Behavior.

People just have to be careful that they don't "avoid" doing what's right all because they want to "fit in." Although the person may fit in, that doesn't necessarily mean that the group that they've chosen to fit in with is headed in the right direction or using a correct moral compass to steer their actions and thoughts.

i guess it may be the need for human interaction. in my sociology class we read about the effects of a child that had no human contact for the first 10 years of its life. the child died at the age of 12 or 13. it did not know how to speak, walk or do anything we consider "human".
if we fit it, we get human interaction, something we all thrive upon.
