Fill the 3 L one, than transfer the content to the 5 L one.

Now fill the 3 L one, and transfer to the 5 L.

You will end up with 3 L at the 5L one, and 1 L at the 3 L one.

Fill the 3 liter pail full. Pour the whole contents into the 5 liter pail. Then fill the 3 liter pail full again and pour the contents into the 5 liter pail until it is full (it will hold another 2 liters). This will leave exactly 1 liter in the 3 liter pail.

Fill the 3-liter pail and pour the contents into the 5-liter pail. Refill the 3-liter pail and slowly pour the contents into the 5-liter pail. Stop pouring when the 5-liter pail reaches the full mark. That leave 1 liter in the 3-liter pail.

Good luck!

Fill up the 3 liter pail then pour it into the empty 5 liter pail. Now there's 3 liters in the 5 liter pail. Now fill up the 3 liter pail again and pour it into the 5 liter pail again until that's full. You should've only filled up 2 liters that time. Voila! You have 1 liter left in your 3 liter pail.

quite simple

fill 3 liter pail up

pour into 5 liter pail (5 liter pail has 2 liters left to fill)

fill 3 liter pail up again

pour into 5 liter pail again (your now filling the last 2 liters in the 5 liter pail)

now you have just 1 liter left in the 3 liter
