It wouldn't make a difference which format you use. If you use a diary format, then you have to talk about when you were recovering from drug addiction day by day. If you do it from your point of view, you just need to remember the most important parts when you were recovering. It would be easier to do that in my opinion.

i think you should write it as a sort of autobiography. I have a friend who is doing the exact same thing, on the exact same topic. If you keep it personal, it will be more real to those who read it, and if your purpose is to try to help others, it will be alot easier to do that. I mean, if it is more realistic to others, they may be more open to accepting and trusting that you know what you are talking about. know what I mean? Well, iif you only want to entertain or to get the "idea" out there, then a storyline would be the way to go for that. It will keep people interested and entertained, but they may not take it too seriously and therefore may not be able to learn anything from it. It is up to you, good luck, and I hope the book is a bestseller either way.

I would start off with an introudiction, not a diary but kinda like from your point of view and very casual since you lived through it it should be easy for you to relate. If you have a diary about it look back on ur diary and use things from that.

It's your book - you decide. How do you want it to be? Do you want it to be like a diary/journal? Or do you want it to be like a novel? Changing a diary to a book is a lot of work, so if you feel overwhelmed perhaps you should turn it over to a professional writer. It sounds like a great story - good luck in making your choice.

Either way is fine, you're the writer you can format it any way you want to. Hell, even develop a new style of writing if you're talented enough.
The diary style is great if you plan on doing lots of introspective writing, but it makes developing a story outside the head of the narrator a bit more diffiult since everything has to relate to the narrator as personal experience.
Oh, and don't name your story "All the Little Pieces", be named James Frey, and decide to go on Oprah.

The diary format is OVERdone. My name is Alice and all of those types. Be original. Write it about a teen, but make it fresh with modern things in it. Interview actual drug addicted teens.

I would say story as reading diary extracts can get boring after a while. But go for it - let others see that there is a way out.

I would make an ebook out of it. The problem with this is how impersonal it is, but if it works out, you can move on to make a normal book. With ebooks, there's really no struggles with publishers, and also, recovering drug addicts or drug addicts are likely to go on the internet for help.
The best way to go about this is with SiteBuildIt.

Don't overthink this... Be sure you write from your heart. This is what will touch readers and make them buy/read your book. Write from personal experience and be sure to get to your real feelings in the book. If you don't have personal experience with this, find something else to write about.
