I have a 1996 Geo Prizm, thats about all I know about cars. Today when I was driving, I could hear a very quite knocking sound. When I drove home I could hear it a little louder. When I drove home from the gym it got really loud. When I would stop it would stop and when I drove faster, it got louder. I think I need new brakes, could this have anything to do with it?

I just checked the oil its says its full, I know I'm a girl but I know when to get my oil changed. The car has 140788 miles on it and its not due for another oil change till 142251 or sept. 11.

This could be a lot of things, an engine bearing, a wheel bearing, or even warped rotors or a loose wheel. I would make sure that the engine has oil and if it has been changed first of all. check to make sure that your wheels are tight as well. If none of these checks don't solve the problem; take your car to a competent mechanic that won't waste your money swapping parts. You car is ten years old and I'm thing your engine might be throwing a rod. This is very likely if you or any previous owners haven't checked the oil. My sisters blew the motor in their car and acted amazed when I informed them there was no oil in the engine and this made it seize up. Hope this helps, and that it isn't your motor.

It does not sound like brakes. Brakes would act up usually only when you would be stopping. Furthermore, brakes would make more of a metallic scraping/screaching sound.
As someone else pointed out, it could be a CV shaft.
Does it sound like a clicking noise? Does the car pull to one side or the other ?

You probably spun a crank bearing.
The reason it makes MORE noise when you accelerate is the engine is generating more horse power and pushes the crank against the bearing cap.
Consider looking for another car.
This repair is going to be expensive. Near $2000

the noise you heard is most likely from your engine. just start the car .if you hear that same knocking sound (without moving the car ) then you might need some engine work. this is based on the mileage you gave.

If it was your breaks you would be like a rubbing sound or squeaking sound. But this sounds like it could be a number of things. But then again it may be your breaks, you should have it check out because you don't want to get stranded any ware. It also helps if you have a good mechanic who want charge you a lot.

First guess would be CV joints. Get it checked.
I would expect wheel bearings to howl more than click, either way you need to get it fixed.
The noise wouln't stop when you stopped if it were an engine bearing.
When you get back from the shop let us know.

Knocking happens due to incomplete combustion of petroleum. Try using a higher octane rating petroleum, it'll burn better. Low octane combustes when it shouldn't combust and produce "knockings".
