SPAM is an acronym - Stuff Posing As Mail. The first word did not start out as "stuff" but began with an "s" and had "t" in with it too. :)
Good luck!

I've never heard the acronym "Stuff Posing As Mail," although I do like it. I've always heard that it had something to do with the Monty Python skits regarding the processed meat product Spam. In the skits, if you are unfamiliar, there is a restaurant and Spam comes with every menu selection, whether you wanted it or not.

The term spam is derived from the Monty Python SPAM sketch, set in a cafe where nearly every item on the menu includes SPAM luncheon meat. As the server recites the SPAM-filled menu, a chorus of Viking patrons drowns out all conversations with a song repeating "SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM... lovely SPAM, wonderful SPAM," hence "SPAMming" the dialogue.
