The simple answer is that we celebrate Columbus Day because it's a federal holiday.
The more complete answer is that despite the history associated with Columbus and the havoc that Spain brought to the New World, he is still considered to be a hero in the eyes of a number of people. Generally Italian-Americans view him with heroic eyes as Columbus was supposedly Italian. The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal order, also view Columbus in a positive way, and they're the ones who pressed for the holiday in the 1930's.
If you disagree with the idea of honouring Columbus with a holiday, then decline to celebrate it. As far as I'm concerned, it's not really a day different from another except that the bank and post office are closed. As least Canada is wise enough to call it Thanksgiving.

He did not actually discover America. Did you know that? He discovered the Bahamas and parts of South America. It was actually a guy named Amerigo Vespucci. He was from the country of Italy. We took his first name and named our country America. This is a real fact. It is in the history books. It would be Columbia if Columbus actually discovered our country. Columbus did enslave many, many people, but most people did back then. I do not really support hi, though. We should have a holiday for Amerigo Vespucci. I should ask the government to change Columbus Day to Vespucci Day.

If it weren't for Columbus though, we never would have had all the great countries we have in the Americas, particularly the U.S. Columbus Day is more a celebration of the start of those countries

Columbus used to be a national hero, on the order of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. His "discovery" made America possible, or that was the rationale. In the last couple of decades he has fallen out of favor with the public (rightly so, says I).

Columbus did NOT kill millions of people. Where the hell did you get that from? OK, he mistreated some natives, but you have a big problem with orders of magnitude. As for his holiday, it's mainly an excuse for another 3-day weekend for the office crowd.

Techinically it wasn't him that killed them, it was the men he left behind. Columbus actually originally went exploring so that he could spread the Gospel. We celebrate Columbus day because he's who found the New World(no one in Europe knew it was there) and so we aknowledge that.

Because if it wern't for him and his crew getting freindly with the sheep we may not have the glorious condition you and i know as syphilis.
he's a trailblazer he managed to "discover" an entire continent full of people! Think about it it sounds impossible, but that just shows how great he really was. I'm kidding he was a dumbass, and because of him native americans have the most ignorrant titles ever - Indians, because he thought he was in India.
by the way he discovered the west indies, the americas are named after the guy who discovered them.

Good question. I don't know why we celebrate imperialism and the genocide of hundreds of natives.
