A single is usually 1 track on each side of the record (sometimes more with remixes etc... the song on the other side is called a B-Side).
An album is the artists (or record companies) vision of a complete product. This usually has 8-15 songs on it.

An album is a compilation of songs recorded and produced by a band that are released together on one disk.
A single is an individual song from an album released separately to maximise profits and gain publicity for the album to increase sales. Most singles have B-sides (an additional song not inculded on the album) to encourage people to buy the single as well as the album.
