I understand that people have different standards for how much proof they need, before they believe in something. What I don't understand is this.
If the major proof of God's existence is old records and eye-witness accounts from 2000 years ago, how do you justify believing in those and totally disregarding witnesses who claim to have met other gods from other religions all over the world.

Way back when, those who followed the "old ways" were scared into believing the "new ways"... not always with anything physical, but by the mental. People were gullible (and still are) and believed just about anything, the harsher it sounded the more it was believed. Those of the "new ways" took from the "old", twisted it and making it seem that the "old ways" were the "evils" of the "new ways". Gradually these "new ways" took over. Any records of the "old ways" were soon lost, or destroyed by those who followed the "new ways".

I have to ask... How many people now-a-days would believe some guy if he came forward, claiming to have seen (and spoken to) God? Even the most devout follower of the "new ways" would have the man locked up in a bubble room for life!

These mental images created from those of the "new ways" are continued to let grow to this day. It is encouraged because people are afraid of change, afraid of being wrong, and afraid to discover they are responsible for themselves instead of having a wonderful created "scapegoat" to blame for their own wrongs.

A very good question. I have often wondered why bible thumpers assume GOD died 2,000 years ago. Sort of makes Fatima hard to comprehend doesn't it? In that GOD is all things known and unknown means that GOD is the other gods. Chew on that awhile. Really want to upset the narrow mind? Mention that GOD is all things, then mention something disgusting and watch them squirm. There are as many gods as you desire. And as GOD is all things, they are all GOD. My point is, man made god in his own image. Try to envision an old man living up where no life exists. Imagine a man with hands and fingers creating with his mind alone. Imagine a father without a corresponding mother. What is a father? What is a mother? Can you have one without the other? Can GOD be both? Or in reality, can GOD be an intelligence and not a human? If life exists on another planet do they have their own god or is our GOD the GOD of all? Our GOD would be if ours were not in human form.
These are things no one thinks about because it is easier to let a preacher who never thinks do our thinking for us.
Vaya con DIOS

I believe because they have been thaught so.
In history, religion comes from a practical, multitheist system - based on natural phenomena that impressed people, and based on predictive/calendar values of natural phenomena like the movement of sun/moon/stars. It was linked to the state of the knowhow of those civilisations.
Some civilisations simplified it to one main god, it was easier to manage by the leader - nomads, the roman empire after 330, the arab unification... and was imposed on the people - cfr the golden lamb, "there is only one god..".
I believe people exclude other gods because monotheistic religions defend the absolute, and fight free thinking and therefore the option to even evaluate other options., It is perfectly understandable, as this would be suicidal for any kind of absolute system to be put in question. We are trained to believe in one god only - allah for islam, god for israeli's and christians. And remember how the germans and the french fought on the battlefields - "für Gott und Vaterland" "pour dieu et la patrie". That illustrates how people's belief was abused - and unfortunately still is abused in the name of one god.

People believe all kinds of things which are not consistent even within their belief system, let alone comparing it to others. The key to understanding religion is not to examine it too closely...it's all based on faith.

Self deception. We believe what we want to believe, no matter how illogical or self-contradictory. And then we teach it to our children before they are old enough to have any analytical ability, and some of them never are intellectually curious enough to ask good questions like this one. Keep on questioning!

Bigotry is very comfortable.

Evil.

But comfortable.
