it was probably caused by boring beetles which are really bad this year in dallas area. if you dont close up the wound, the sap attracts bacteria which then cause it to die. you can use a systemic insect and disease killer, i think ortho makes one, and also get a tree sealer to close any wounds the tree has. But once it has been infected with a disease, its very hard to get it to recover. Also, tape wont work. Disease cat get under the tape because tree bark isnt a smooth surface so the tape obviously isnt going to close all the tiny grooves.

could be a wound caused by a tree boring beetle or maybe a woodpecker. scrape off the sap and apply tree wound dressing, can buy this at any good home and garden store.

Borers. Find some floral wire & run it into the holes to kill the beggars. When it cools off spray the whole trunk with light horticultural oil.

We had one that did the same thing. We taped it and got one more season out of it and then had to dispose of it. It's diseased and when it starts doing that, get rid of it. I don't know why they do that but a lot of people complain about that. It's a shame because they're so pretty.
