I thought it was impossible until I was taught. I went to a tai chi clas with meditation. It is very hard to learn without someone teaching. It took me about 4 sessions before I understood. Its like a dreamstate without actually being asleep, its the only way I can describe it

Relax in a quiet, warm place, you can sit or lie down, whatever is most comfortable. My favourite meditation for novices is to concentrate on the end of your nose, then be aware of and feel the cold air going in and hot air coming out. You will notice that your breathing slows down and your body also relaxes. This is a very simple meditation which you can easily do anywhere and promote an almost instant feeling of well being - you may fall asleep (I do sometimes) although that is not the object but you won't feel dopey!

yes we are into this also. if you are just starting out, try to find some tapes with relaxing music playing, sit alone in a room with no distractions and close your eyes, make sure both feet are on the floor as you need to be grounded, and just relax.
some people stare at a candle flame for a few seconds then close their eyes. while you can still see the image of the flame.
some people do actually fall asleep, but this isnt really the aim. to stop this from happening, make sure the room is not too warm.
oh also, make sure the lights are dimmed.
its not really like falling asleep, more like being in a trance, but it is quite safe as you are still in control, happy meditating!

I learnt meditation following the technique of a Thai-American called Mantak Chia. His system goes beyond focusing on one point (which is the usual way of meditating) instead he advocates moving attention to different areas of the body.
It really isn't like falling asleep because you have to control your attention which, strangely, induces a relaxing feeling which often lasts long after the meditation session.
You can read some more at the link below.

Meditation is deep thinking. People mistake it for relaxation and other related things but these are not strictly true. If you meditate on something you are concentrating on it for its own worth. Christian meditation would have you meditate on scripture. Try Psalm One. Open it, read it, read it again and then begin to meditate on it, thinking deeply about it in a quiet place. The next day you could do it again. Repeat for one week. By the end of the week you will have changed, relaxed, become wiser and closer to God. The next week do John chapter one. You will be surprised at how this changes your whole life.

It's just a simple way to stay present moment orientated by sitting and breathing in and out and taking notice of the breath, it helps the brain to focus on the here and now and not shoot off with hundreds of thoughts that we get lost in. Can be done for any length of time as reqd. Not like sleeping and no dopey feeling.

Indian way is you have to sit on the floor in an empty room. the idea is to empty your mind of all thoughts and your body and mind will achieve total peace and relaxation.
How to do it? I suggest you get a book on this subject and instructions to meditate. search the web and see.

First of all why are you meditating? There has to be a cause to for you to obtain the effect. Search within then ask again.
