Listen. You religious people out there. I don't mean any offense - not that I care about offending anyone regardless - but I'm agnostic. Your God/Jesus quotes don't affect me at all. And besides... I remember hearing that God helps those that help themselves. Well, if you sit on your butt all day and let God handle it... that's a contradiction.
And when I say 'Be harder', I don't mean be cold and selfish and all these things you suggest. I simply mean, fight BACK. Give it your best shot, and do anything you can to prove that you can make it through the test that is life.

It could mean 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going.'
Although there is something of a negative connotation to your quote. The world is full of hardness already. Do you really think you need to prescribe more of it?

I think if you get too hard, though, you become less human. It's important to be able to be vulnerable so that you can have close relationships. I prefer the saying "Stay sweet" - no matter what life throws at you, keep trusting God & don't let life make you into the kind of person you don't want to be.
