Try Cubase SX or ACID music (now by Sony I think) for audio arrangement and MIDI sequencing. Of these 2 packages ACID music is by far the easiest to use. They both have their own plug-in effects and allow you to export finished work in MP3 format and burn to CD-R audio that can be played on all stereos.

Fruity Loops is a good choice if you want to sequence electronic based tracks, like for dance or hiphop. The drums beat sequencing on FL it's easy and versatile but other instruments will sound 'unreal'.

If you want to make tracks using string or wind instruments you will find Reason very usefull. Guitars, Brass, and all kind of acoustic instruments sound amazing in Reason.

For multitracking (Recording real audio track by track) Cakewalk's Sonar would be a great choice.

You can also use Reason sound samples all along with Fruity Loops or Sonar, since there is a protocol called Rewire that let you sync that kind of music production software.

A less sophisticated but easy to use tool is Band-In-a-box. It comes with pre-sequenced beats but sound isn't really good.

If you are a guitar player you will find GuitarPro very 'user friendly' since you can sequence using tablature system with it. It sounds better than Band In-a-Box but sound wouldn't be 'professional' like with first 3 programs I've listed before.

About freeware... there is not a single prog. than you can say "it sounds like that song I've heard on my fav' radio station".

Magix Silver was released as freeware a while back, you could try searching somewhere like Download.com for that. Theres also Ejay, one version is free so you can try it out. Ejay works a bit like Music 2000 on PS2, you drag and drop sound samples on to your track. As you pick up the program you can make oyur own.

There´s a program called "MAGIX guitar music maker" thats pretty good for that. Here´s a link for it in eBay, if you would like. I hope this helps. Good luck with your music. :)
