I think people are against tattoos for a million different reasons...just depends on the person...
Some are against them because they are religious and say the bible is against tattoos and even some say piercings. Back in the day, servents had their ears pierced as a symbol of loyalty to their masters...and tattoos are symbolic in many religions. Some Christians say that we shouldn't tattoo our bodys because they are "temples"... I'm a Christian and I say it's my 'temple', I'll decorate it as I see fit :)
Some hate tattoos cause they think they are ugly or distastful...but then, that's just opinion...I have 3 tattoos at this point (more to come for sure) and I personally think that they are all very tasteful and in fact beautiful. They mean something to me...
Honestly I figure that for the most part, people are so against tattoos because they are too close minded to grasp the fact that its just art...only on skin vs. a piece of cloth.

Personally I love tattoos. I think that people who have a problem with them feel that way because of views which they have been raised with (many parents tell their offspring tattoos are bad, trashy, for loosers etc because those are the values THEY were raised with, which associates tattoos with the bad and mad people in society) Some people object to tattoos on cultural, moral or religious grounds. Some people belive that as they are now so common they are the mark of 'chavs etc' Some people just dont like the look of tattoos, and do not understand why other find them attractive. We are just all different inour tastes and beliefs and values etc

I have a small tattoo on my right shoulder. It's the Taurus symbol. I don't understand what people have against tattoos either. But remember this. Unless you have some kind of expensive laser surgery, you're stuck with the tattoos for the rest of your life. If you get a tattoo with your lover's name on it, then you break up, you still have that person's name on you, even though you're no longer together.
But I agree. You're an adult. You have the right to do whatever you want.

First without trying to sound sarcastic, why would you ask people if you should get a tattoo if you didn't want to get their opinion-- good or bad? You are right, if you are an adult then you shouldn't ask someone else what you should do with your body. I have 2 tattoo's and I didn't ask anyone what they thought and how they felt. It is your body. Do with it what you please. Just remember tattoos are pretty much for life. Even if you have it removed the scar will remain. Get something that means something to you that you will not regret in 20 years.

In general, I think people on YA! don't pay attention to the actual question. They just want to post their opinion. As I love expressing my opinion *smile*, I may incorporate that into my answer. But I try to answer the question asked as well.
For me to feel comfortable with a tattoo, I'd want it to be a symbol of something I truly love and believe in. While I do have very strong & passionate beliefs, there's nothing coming to mind that I want displayed on my body. *shrug* So, no tattoo for me, but everyone else can do what's best for them.
I think religion is like tattoos for a lot of people...if you're the type to shove religion down someone's throat, you're also going to shove your opinion about tattoos down their throat while you're at it.

1. Some people have bad associations with tattoos - they're associated with some fringe groups, some of which are unsavory. Or are perceived as unsavory.
2. Some people regret them, and they're darn inconvenient-to-impossible to get rid of.
If you're an adult and have thought it through, though, then it's really no one else's business. But I do think these people think they are being helpful, so give 'em a little slack. Some of them, anyway.

Honestly, I have no idea..It's not like it's effecting them in any way, shape, or form.
I have one tattoo near my ankle that I waited to get several years to get just to make sure that it wasn't something done on a whim that I may end up regretting. I was 24 when I finally got my tattoo and not one bit of regrett..Shoot, I may even add too it or make some changes later on.
Believe it or not, I actually had some Bible Thumper come up to me stating that she was going to pray for god to heal me..I bit my tongue and never said a word..(Although I really wanted to at the time)

I have heard that from a lot of people who got them at a young age and as they got older they regretted it. My advice is NEVER tattoo someone's name on you (unless it is a family member) and if you do decide to get on, spend some time researching something that has meaning to you. Don't get something on the spur of the moment or what is popular right now, because it is permanent and you want something special enough to endure ;)

I have four tattoos and I love all of them. Most people think that because you have them you are a evil person. Well, not me.
I do recommend that the tattoo be in good taste, as you will be living with it.

If you're getting a tattoo for no apparent reason I would be against it. Telling you not to like everyone else. Its something that you'll have to live with for the rest of your life. That's why a majority of people who actually gets one have a reason for doing it. If you're here asking for what and where? It just goes to show you have done any research on it. You should always go out and visit tattoo palors and see the tattoo artist and their work. How clean the shop is and how well they maintain their equipment. I would say no to you cause you'll just doing it for the hell of it. If that's the case, just go anywhere and put a picture out of a book of illustrations they have.
