Both Syria and Venezuela are third rate countries trying to get some world attention. The Oil issue is big because Venezuela has large reserves and is close to us. They used to supply about 20 percent of our oil but that has been changing. If the US can cut the demand for oil most of our problems will go away. People really need to cut down on unneeded travels to slow the demand for oil.

Venezuela is no threat to anyone.
Chavez is struggling to find support in the world, to make sure that his country is less dependent on the US who has declared itself his enemy. The US is paying out millions of dollars to try to destabilise the government of a man who has been legitimately elected to the presidency by the people of his country. It has also restricted trade with his country and has attempted to interfere with its internal affairs. He fears attack from the US, not without some reason. And it is important for his country that they find other sources for the things they need to import than the US or its allies, so that they can get the things they need.
Venezuela has suffered from imperialist aggression of the US, terrorists have been given shelter in US, and there have been personal attacks on Chavez and attempts to undermine his position.
I don't think Venezuela is next on the hit list, I think that position is still held by Iran. Venezuela is a little too close to home, it would run the risk of seriously upsetting the US applecart in S America, and Chavez has been very busy trying to get allies, (especially important I think is China) so the US can't be sure of the results of attacking him. He is also training and arming the population so that an invader would probably face fierce guerrilla activity.

America would attack and occupy every oil or gas producing nation on Earth if its mostly Neo-Conservative had their own way, problem is that the US public has little appetite for war again and I am sure the US must have taken notice of how it got its butt handed to it when it last tried to "fix" Latin America. I have a lot of respect for Hugo Chavez because he is a leader who is doing what is best for the citizens of his nation, if only we had leaders like that here in the UK. And everyone who claims Venezuela isnt a threat to the US is in a way correct, they cannot militarily harm them but economically they can be the cause of crash greater than that of the depression of the 30's if they manage to convince many other nations to follow their example along with N.Korea, Iran and Syria in doing all their comodities trading in Euros instead of dollars because if this happened banks would get rid of stocks of $ causing the market to become saturated and lead to a crash!

Chavez' rhetoric is basically socialist populism against the equally populist rhetoric of Bush. The Bush administration are uneasy about any left leaning government in South America because they fear it may lead to political instability in the region which could only have an adverse effect on the USA. Yes they have oil and that is a factor but it is the politics the US object to and try to undermine.

Their president is very popular among the "the people" but not popular with the wealthy and with international investors. Contrary to what Pat Robertson once believed, he was democratically elected -- in fact, with much more support than Bush.
However, they have a lot of oil and Chaves (the President) doesn't love the US. Therefore, count on being told that you now hate their country shortly.

Only an economic threat. It's time America ditch oil and start using alternative energy. Unfortunately, this won't happen so long as politicians have money in oil.

We get a ton of oil from them, and we're vulnerable to them cutting us off. They aren't a military threat to us - not that they couldn't shoot at one of our ships in the Carib, but no threat to us here (and no, they aren't terrorists).
