That's toooooo much; somebody's got to develop something somewhere to stop this rediculous waist of bandwidth. Luckily most e-mail clients allow you to filter out a great deal of this garbage.

A study was done from Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group to figure out the percentage of "spam mails" over total volume of emails. The sample was taken from over 100 million email boxes.

think about it - how many of your emails in your box right now are solicited (meaning you asked to recieve them)?

Usually none.

How many are from close friends or business partners?

Usually just a few...
