I always dreamed of having masses of people drawn to me like moths to a flame but now that it has come to fruition - I wish they would just go away...

Is this normal? ;)

To some extent. If people tend to be drawn to you, maybe you are just a natural leader. It's great to have friends who care, have the same interests, etc.. You'll know over time who your true friends are, they'll still be there when the chips are down.

I've heard this old saying/joke.

A good friend is someone who will come bail you out of jail at 3 a.m.

A great friend will be sitting right next to you.

Um... well I don't think it's possible to have too many people you're on good terms with. But a friendship, like any relationship, needs a certain amount of time and attention spent on it regularly and that just can't happen with a ton of friends. You'd be stretched way too thin. Get yourself a good collection of acquaintances and semi-friends and keep your 'true friend' circle down to a small handful of people.

Yes, in order to have friends, and stay friends, it means spending a lot of time with them. The more you have the less time you have to yourself.
So each one of the new friends, gets very little of your time, and you have even less to spend, with them, and yourself.
It's best to have a few good friends, then the rest as acquaintances.
