Click on the Start menu, hit Run then type "format C: /R /F".

Alternatively, open My Computer, right-click over the device/partition you want to trash and select "Format..."

But hey - only do this if you really want to completely delete everything on that device. And if this is your boot partition (i.e., the partition, like C:, with your Operating System on it - Windows, for instance) be aware that you'll have to reinstall an OS if you want your machine to be of any use.

Ask the question again - you only reformat it you have a really serious problem. I'm about to reformat my desktop and it's mainly because the HDD is a mess! But I have backed up everything - I hope. But just forgetting something minor like the code I have to put in for my firewall/antivirus could be a disaster. The encyption key for my network is also something I have to check. in fact I'll check everything again and double check that!.

Why do you want to reformat?
What operating system are you using?
What operating system are you going to use after re-formatting?
have you backed up all your data?
have you backed up all your cabinet file, and compressed program files that you may have downloaded?
Do you know all the keys you may need to get all the programs working again?
Do you have the CD's for all the programs you want to install after you've re-formatted?
If you have ICQ - have you written down your ICQ number?
If you have saved some passwords to disk - have you made a note of them or committed them to memory.
Do you have a A: drive - floppy disk drive? This is sometimes needed to install older operating systems - but not those like XP - that are on a bootable CD.
Finally, if you have a bootable XP CD - you will probably find format on there and fdisk and the instructions on how to format a drive. Basically you run Fdisk and then format - usually with format /s to put system files on. But I'm not sure if XP need the sys files. Best, just to boot from the CD and follow the instructions.

you need to create a floppy disk (backup)

My Computer > Right click A: format (ms-dos)
then use the floppy to boot
then

use ms-dos to format your hard drive

So, boot ur system from a disk and type in FORMAT C:
