kay,the question is "estimate the sum of 633,987,and 1264".I tried adding them all to get the sum and the answer I got was 2884.but it said it was incorrect.so obviously that isnt the way to figure out the sum of a group of numbers.so can you explain the correct way for me to do it?Dont just automatically give me the answer.I want an explanation first then the answer along with it.cause I dont get this 8th grade stuff.lol

Presuming it's three numbers else you would have put a , in 1264. We'll also presume we're estimating to 100's.
Take 633, 987, and 1264
Estimate using 600, 1000 and 1300 (just round to nearest 100), then add.
which would = 2900 total.
Voila! :-)

The key is not just the sum of the three numbers that were listed, but an estimated sum. This is determined by rounding and adding them together in your head. The problem is that I don't know to what digit your teacher is having you round the sums, so I'll give you an example of what I would answer, if the estimations are to the 100's place:
Estimate the sum of 644, 987 and 1264 to the hundreds place:
644 rounded is 600
987 rounded is 1000
and 1264 rounded is 1300
Those rounded numbers together puts me at 2900. That would be my answer.
The point of this is to simplify an answer that you can do in your head. If your teacher wants them rounded to the tens place, just do the same, only remember the rules of rounding (5 and above go up, 4 and below go down).

I think the reason it said it was wrong is because you gave the exact answer..where you should've been estimating. If you look at 633 and 1264, you see that 633 is a little below 650 and 1264 is a little above 1250 (which are both easy numbers to add). Because you are raising one number, and lowering another, you can change these without greatly affecting the sum. Then you look at 987 which is farily close to 1000. So now you take 1250 + 650 + 1000 which gives you 2900. See if that gets you the right answer.

I would guess they would want an estimate of the answer (not the exact answer). It appears they want you to add three numbers based on the appearance of the second comma (after 987). My estimate would be based on rounding the numbers to the closest hundred. 633 rounds to 600. 987 rounds to 1000. 1264 rounds to 1300. 6 + 10 + 13 = 29 hundreds (or 2900). That is the only way I can see to estimate the answer. The only problem with this new math it seems kind of open to interpertation. I guess that's what's new!

Well, you know the word sum means add, right? And you're supposed to estimate. So take a close look at the numbers and round them to the nearest thousand. (The nearest thousand because the smaller number is at least 1,000) In this case the smaller number (1264) is closest to 1000 (and not 2000) and the bigger number (633,987) in the thousandth column is closest to 4000. So that number rounded off is 634,000 and you have 1000 in the other number to add to the smaller number. That estimate should give you 635,000.

Estimating the answer is different than adding all the numbers. To estimate the answer, round off each number, then add the rounded numbers.

This estimate is closest to the real sum.
I rounded to the nearest tenth for the above answer.
If your book answer is different, try rounding to the nearest hundreth. 600+1000+1300 = 2900
The idea is to get you used to doing the basic math in your head. The answer will not be exact, but you will have a good idea of what the answer might be, without actually doing the adding on paper or a calculator..

Estimate the sum of 633,987 and 1264 means just that estimate the sum of those two numbers...
633,987 is almost 634,000...
1264 is almost 1300...
so the estimated sum should be 635,300

If you were going to estimate that in your head, you can round off 633,987 to 634,000 and add 1264 which would give you 635,264.

well if it says estimate you're ognna round to the nearest hundred so 633 would be 630 and 987 would be 1000 and 1264 would be 1000 so add that way and thats the estimate

Well, since it says estimate, you should round 633987 and 1264. But how far you have to round depends. Try rounding to the nearest thousand. so 1000 plus 633000, which would equal 634000. You could also do the same with hundreds or even tens.
