The earlier answers are correct, nursing services were initially based on the Christian principles and were staffed by nuns whose senior was a' Sister' (and as some still are).

Nursing, however, as a vocation, also had a reputation that was not ....'good.' Whores, nurses and actress's were all lumped together by society ...away back then.

From what I can remember reading about it, your basic 'Illness' was seen as 'your own damned fault,' and was a punishment brought on you by God for some sin you'd been involved with / done. Thus, the very act of 'nursing someone' was seen as ''an act against Gods' will.''

'Nursing' and that kind of thing tends to push you towards the boundaries of a decent God loving Society and the edge of the Badlands ....and Outlaw behaviours.

So, be good and you won't get 'Visited' by a wrathful God - or even a 'god' (a minor deity) .... and you'll thus, here on Earth, will avoid the clutches of Nurses, Whores and Actress's.

Sash.'

The whole nun theory is right.
So is the story abought nurses being equated with whores is also very true. Where that turned around when at the end of the Crimean War when Florence Nightingale and her nurses returned to England, alot of people showed up to ridicule them, as they were "Gentle ladies" and only whores would touch a man in any personal way. However when Queen Victoria should up to welcome them home , the whole attitude changed.

I agree with madamspud - 1st answer about the sisters being nuns, but why is a mid wife, called a mid wife?

Probably because she's a nun. Nowadays, you call a nun sister and you call a nurse, nurse. Or maybe because she's a real sister.

I think its because there was a time when nurses were nuns from convents and the like so they were actual sisters and the name just stuck.
