Wondering when or if it would be acceptable to reveal dark guarded secrets of families past to new friends and/or work mates. It's pretty deep and convoluted, but it's all really about who I am.

Does one wait to be asked? Or blurt in out in passing? Or die from the pain inside festering?

If you are considering marriage, then your fiancee should be told. I'm glad my husband was honest with me about some things in his family before we had to make the decision whether or not to have kids!

It's not a good idea to share family secrets with workmates, ever. These friendships usually last only as long as you are working together, and your good buddy could be a blabbermouth months from now.

I would suggest that you do one of two things (or both): find a support group for people with the type of problem your family has (such as Al-Anon for adult children of alcoholics) AND/OR talk to a mental health professional. If you have pain that festers, you need to talk to someone in a safe setting, someone who will not hold it against you or talk about you behind your back or give inappropriate advice.

Good luck!

ok enable's be honest. The Williams kin isn't thoroughly wacko. Isabella married or have been given into the kin yet Ricky is extraordinary little doubt. Then there is Patty who's loopy adequate for 10 families. Paul is an upstanding,if boring, guy and Todd is a clergyman (nc). activities? perhaps that's YA that's wacko-lol.

I think if it comes up naturally in conversation, then you can talk about it. Also, you don't need to tell the whole story - maybe just refer a little to it, and if people ask questions, you can tell more. But it does sound as though - because it's bursting out of you & is this pain inside you - that this stuff still bothers you a lot. I think you need to think about working through these things, and finding someone you can really trust to talk it through with.

You really need to be careful about what you reveal and to who. Most people wind up judging you for things. I have finally learned after 36 yrs to NEVER tell people my dark secrets. Nothing good has ever come out of it.

Wait until you get to know them, because you might regret telling a new friend that you don't know very well. What if they told others that you didn't want to know? Just wait.
