Because until later in the fetal development cycle, females and males are virtually identical. When a human fetuses gene's determine it's sex to be female the breasts form and have the function of providing milk to a baby should the female choose to have one. In the case of the male, the breasts never develop and the nipples are left useless. Some men however would say that they are useful for sexual stimulation.
Oh and IMHO Adam and Eve are fictional characters, they were not real people so it would be pointless to guess whether Adam had nipples.

The good answer is of course already present. But how about this one: God in all his goodness foresaw that some men would in later times opt for a sex-change operation. He could clearly see how the scrotum could be made into labia and the glans into a clit. The nipples would be a huge problem to make from scratch. Now that is why men have nipples. As for Adam, he was the only manly man ever, he would probably be categorized as a pappalian or manmalian. ;)

The answer is that as embryos men and women have similar tissues and body parts. If anything the embryo follows a 'female template'. That is why nipples are present in both sexes. It is the effect of the genes, the Y chromosome and the hormone testosterone that brings about the changes and masculinises the embryo. Testosterone promotes the growth of the penis and testicles. Because nipples are there before this process begins the nipples stay!

It's true though. Males grow as female in the early stages of development. It's not until later does the Y chromosome kick in to grow a penis.
Why ask a scientific question if you believe in the Adam and Eve story?
And no, men have not nursed in the past. They lack mamory glands.

They're there because the Creator, in His infinite wisdom knew that all these melania later men would find them necessary in order to wear nipple rings.

It is true, for the first couple of weeks, the fetus is a girl, and then, it starts to grow into a male or female. It was in my science book.
