James Buchanan
the only bachelor president, almost married in 1819. His fiance, Anne Caroline Coleman, broke off the engagement and died a week later, probably by suicide. Rumors was that he was to marry her for her money since she was in a wealthy family. Buchanan maintained an ironclad silence about the relationship throughout the rest of his life. He asked to come to the funeral but her father refused him to come. He wrote a letter what happened - sealed it - before he died, had friend destroy it. born April 23, 1791 near Mercersburg, PA highlights: State Legislative Service: PA (1814-1815) House of Representatives: PA (1821-1831) Senator: Pennsylvania (1834-1845) Cabinet Service: Secretary of State (James K. Polk, 1845-1849) worst ranked President by many historians for not doing anything to help prevent the Civil War. When S.C. succeeded from the Union, basically felt like he could do nothing and so he did. Felt that the U.S. would not exist much longer and remarked to Lincoln on their way to the Capitol, ""My dear, sir, if you are as happy on entering the White House as I on leaving, you are a very happy man indeed." possibly gay death - June 1, 1868 - Wheatland, Pennsylvania
