my mother had regular periods during the entire 8 months she was pregnant with me
7 days of bleeding total with 4-5 being heavy flow
she also had a rarity where she never had a positive pregnancy test (blood or urine) her pregnancy was confirmed with a pelvic exam and dated to more than 5 months by ultrasound when it was found she was pregnant. until that time the doctor had misdiagnosed her as having a rare form of leukemia and told her she had three months to live.

There are some women who continue to shed an incoplete lining of their uterus for the first few months of their pregnancies.
My cousin was one of them. She bled the same amount, for the same duration of time each month during her first 6 months of pregnancy, as she did on every period.
But for most women that type of bleeding during pregnancy is a result of a miscarriage.
Spotting however, is quite common, especially durring the first few weeks and even the first couple months of pregnancy. Even towards the very end of your term as the cervix can become irritated from sex or pressure and result in some light spotting.
But generally women do not have periods when pregnant, as the lining of the uterus must be intact for the embryo to attach itself and begin the creation of the amniotic sac, placenta and fetus.

It can't be a "real period" where the lining of the uterus is shed completely or the growing embryo would also be shed. They're speaking of excess stuff that gets shed. It's bleeding so there's a tendency to use the word period to describe it.
