We yawn because of lack of oxygen

Lack of oxygen. That's it. We may be tired, but we're not breathing well and the yawn makes us do so.

We yawn when our CO2 (carbon dioxide) level in our blood gets too high and regular breathing isn't clearing it out fast enough. Healthy peoples' oxygen levels never change, they are always the same, at around 97%-100% saturation. It's our CO2 level that makes us need to breathe.
