I agree with highbriddrummonkey..will just add that the f2 key "thing" is the way to get you into the bios whilst booting up...some computers its not the f2 key but the delete key.
From memory the boot up sequence (to make your disk drive first in the boot up sequence) can be altered in "advanced configuration" in the Bios...it shows you what keys to use to alter the sequence & save/exit at the base of the bios window

There is a sure fire way of recovering your files on your PC,I would suggest getting a copy of Knoppix. This is an Operating system packed onto a CD that can recover all of the files on your PC and if you choose can become a replacement Operating System,There are others like Ubuntu and Suse who have this ability and are easier to install onto your Hard drive as they Partition it and take care of all the hard work for you .
Once installed you can view all of your files in your my Document etc,and copy them over,Personally I would go for the Dual Boot route that would allow you to retain Windows if you still felt uncomfortable about learning a new operating system(but Linux) has Loads of advantages such as huge free Software packages that will do just about anything you could wish for,Oh and there free! You an get a copy of Knoppix form various Places but PC Mags usually have this or Ubuntu on there cover Cd's or Google it for loads more info
Hope this helps?

I would go down the repair option route too........start the PC and watch the screen...press F2 when it prompts you to do so to enter set up.....navigate using the arrow keys till you see the part that says "boot from" and change the order so that CD ROM is first...save these setting then exit. Now put your xp disk in and shut down...watch the screen...you will see "press any key to boot from disk".. hit any key. The xp disk will examine your system then give you options, choose to repair existing copy of windows. Hope that helps

when you see the windows loading screen then the screen goes blank - this is because windows is loading the on board graphix adaptor and if there is a problem with this - this can cause this problem
goto the advanced startup menu again and this time select the option - ENABLE VGA MODE
Does this go into windows - of so then uninstall the display adaptor and see if this solves the problem

turn on ur pc and insert your XP installation disk, if i recall correctly you should get an option to boot from the CD. This will make windoze boot and you should be able to access anything you want to recover and burn it to a disk.
however, if you boot from disk ok, simply reinstalling or (ideally) repairing XP (not a 'new installation') should reinstall XP and your files wont be affected.
also, make sure you use a good crap removal software, dont use ones you find in adverts on websites, stick to Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware

Okay if you are going to recover your files you need to somehow get a boot-up disk for Microsoft XP~ then book from it...
Then do the following dos prompts:
> C:(Location of disks)
> Copy: *.* Location (for example D:)

Run Ad-Aware in "Safe-Mode". Safe mode is actually Windows 98. None of the "bells and whistles" that are present in Windows XP, so Ad-Aware runs more effectively. Also run your anti-virus in safe mode.
