My friend is allergic to caffine. She has never been checked but she says it gives her a sinus infection. Her son is 19 months. When he was younger, somone gave him an oreo behind her back. A few days later he had a little stuffy nose. When she found out what had happend she swore up and down he got sick from the oreo and now says he is allergic to caffine. last sunday the same thing happend. He got ahold of a chocolate chip cookie and now here it is wensday and he is getting a little sick. I dont know anything about allergies, but I though if you were allergic to something it woud affect you imediatly. Is it possible he could be allergic or is it just a coincidence that he got sick and its all in her head?

If it were an allergy the reaction would be much more rapid - hours at the longest so I very much doubt that the baby is sensitive. I would also point out that allergic reactions are NOT inherited from the parents. The only over sensitive person here is your friend, she should stop over reacting and treating the baby like some fragile piece of cut glass. In the early part of life it is not good to isolate a baby from everything as this prevents the immune system from developing properly which is a cause of allergies. When I grew up foods were not so heavily wrapped and sterilized and at that time serious allergies were quite rare where as today they are very common, asthma being a good example of one that has increased out of all proportion.

I have allergies. If you have strong allergies, they can affect you immediately. The best way to tell is to see an allergist where they test you for specific allergies. It may be something different like dust that could cause the sinus infections.

I am allergic to dust and it can take up to a week for it to give me a sinus infection. I take allergy medicines and try to sweep regularly and wash my bedclothes weekly to alleviate the symptoms and prevent an infection.

No, I would say the lad has a sensitivity all right. Two times of getting sick after eating chocolate looks very suspicious.

It is indeed possible to be sensitive to caffeine.
