There is some debate as to who invented the airplane. Albert Santos Dumont 14-bis took off without the help of any external device, and he is considered in Brazil and France the Father or Aviation.
Clement Ader invented a self-powered aircraft (the Eole) that flew and landed 50 meters (1890), 200 meters in 1892 and 300 meters in 1897.
Richard Pearse did fly in 1903, although it was not under pilot control. German Karl Jartho also made his first flight that year.
The Wright Brothers are commonly credited with the invention of the aircraft, but like Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, theirs was rather the first sustainable and well documented attempt. (they had as much as six people -lay- observing their 1st flight- from which two were their helpers)They made their first successful test flights on December 17, 1903 and by 1905 Flyer III was capable of fully controllable, stable flight for substantial periods, present about 31mph (from which 21 were due to the wind.)

Of course, the Wright brothers did not "invent" the airplane...the concept had existed for centuries. And, no, Leonardo da Vinci wasn't the first to think of it either...though his plans for a flying machine may be the oldest we actually know of.
The Wright Brothers are merely the first to build and successfully fly an airplane.

The person who invents something is the one who is the first to make it work, and make it practical. That is invention.
An invention is not realized until it performs its intended purpose. And the Wright Brothers ARE the inventors of the first working, mechanized, flying aircraft.
However, many dreamed of it before them. DaVinci had plans drawn up, as did many other old and modern thinkers. However, the TRUE inventors were the Wright Brothers.

Inventing something and imagining it are 2 different things. I would stick with the Wright brothers.
Otto Lilienthal runs a close second.

The Wright Brothers got the patent, and that's all that really matters.

The Wright Brothers were the first to get something air born. There was another man whose name I don't recall who was frantically racing against them to try to get his model to fly first, but he failed. I am with the others who said Da Vinci. I seem to recall drawings and models of his.
